DEI Coordinator – Candidate Profile
This candidate profile of our next DEI Coordinator was designed with input from staff, District Administrators, and community members.
The administration of the Portage Public Schools seeks a DEI Coordinator with demonstrated leadership skills who can model and promote ethical standards of democracy, equity, diversity, and excellence.
The successful candidate will be growth-minded, curious, courageous, culturally intelligent and a collaborative agent for change.
PPS’ goal is to make sure that every student and employee feel included and welcomed and are provided access to resources and opportunities for success.
The District is seeking a leader who: Possess a passion for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and a strong Cultural Intelligence.
To that point, we seek a leader who: Can develop, coordinate and deliver engaging professional development programs to a variety of audiences; Will provide coordination, consultation and assistance to the Superintendent and Executive Leadership team; Work as a mediator in meetings with parents/staff members/students to promote inclusion and positive influence; Fosters critical thinking and reflective analysis from various perspectives to promote individual and group growth initiatives.
Fosters a collaborative, positive climate of mutual trust and respect among all stakeholders; faculty, staff, administrators, students, parents, and community members.
To that end, we seek a leader who: Actively engages, elicits, listens to and addresses concerns and criticisms in an open, respectful and receptive manner; Is able to develop strong connections with staff, parents, other District partners, and students to enhance each individual’s equity experience and build support for future initiatives; Promotes teamwork and collaboration; Will lead by example of our PPS Pillars, commitment to equity, common values, and our standards of service excellence.
Support the district’s efforts to diversity staff to be more representative of the student body.
To that point, we seek a leader who: Works to support Recruiting and Retention efforts at the building and Administrative levels, including intern program; Collaborates in employee career pathway development plans to strengthen the teacher pipeline and assist with succession planning including barrier removal from career progression; Will work with external partners, including local and state government and community based organizations to better align PPS equity efforts to the community.
Works to ensure Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Message is represented and transparent in district policies, practices, documentation and social media.
For this reason we see a leader who: Will create and maintain the DEI section on the PPS web page; Collaborates with the PPS DEI Culture Climate Influencers and the District Values Team; Partner with other PPS departments to ensure documentation is reviewed for equity impact.

Within the district are two traditional high schools and one alternative high school, three (3) middle schools, and eight (8) elementary schools, serving about 8,600 students.
