School of Medicine (WMed) is seeking a Director of Financial Aid.
The Director of Financial Aid has comprehensive responsibility for financial aid programs of the medical school to support the success of students and residents.
Responsibilities include: effective and proper administration of the financial aid office including the development, deployment and improvement of all student and resident financial aid processes; developing, designing and participating in delivery of medical student and resident curricula for debt management and financial planning; facilitating student and resident financial aid knowledge; identifying resources and qualified individuals for students and residents for individual counseling for debt management, financial planning and decision-making.
Responsibilities: Maintains competency for interpretation and assures continuing institutional compliance of the financial aid office with all federal (including FERPA), state and local regulations and medical school policies.
Provides input for policies regarding student and resident financial aid programs.
Determines the annual medical student Cost of Attendance.
Design, deploy and improve processes and procedures to support student and resident financial aid policies.
Identify, investigate, analyze and develop approaches to address individual applicant and student financial challenges.
Develop, design and participate in delivery of medical student and resident curricula for budgeting, financial planning and debt management to help students and residents borrow responsibly and repay responsibly.
Support the success of students and residents to meet their career, specialty and personal financial goals and objectives.
Identify tools, resources and qualified individuals for students and residents for individual counseling for debt management, financial planning and decision-making.
Assist each student and resident in understanding their loan portfolios, borrowing options and repayment options.
Provide entrance and exit loan interviews for medical students, preparing them for the transition to residency.
Provide information through group and individual meetings to facilitate student and resident financial aid knowledge including the impact of non-educational debt on students’ and residents’ cumulative indebtedness.
Provide support to the Student Scholarship Committee for scholarships, medical school budgeting, award calculations and student/family needs analyses.
Develop materials and provide information to medical students about scholarships and awards from the medical school and extramural sources including private scholarships, public service and military service opportunities.
Management of the day-to-day operation of the financial aid office.
Manage the financial aid module of the student information system and maintain financial records; collaborate with IT for support of the financial aid module including interfaces with other modules of the student information system and other systems.
Interview applicants/students/parents applying for financial aid, evaluate eligibility and execute sound judgment.
Authorize grant and loan payments and tuition deferments.
Respond to inquiries and correspond with medical school departments and outside agencies.
Prepare reports of financial aid activities for the medical school; for federal, state and local agencies; and for other financial aid entities as needed.
Provide secure data management of all student financial records, and develop student financial reports.
Assist the Accounting Office by providing financial reports and related data as required for accounting, reporting and audit purposes as required.
Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as defined by the “Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act,” also known as “The Clery Act.
” Completes annual CSA training as required to maintain knowledge of campus safety and security policies and procedures.
Availability to work on weekends and evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree supplemented with at least three (3) years of related experience in a student financial aid or student affairs office; Master’s degree preferred.
Experience at a medical school in a student financial aid or student affairs office preferred.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS: NASFAA credentials preferred OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Ability to act with tact and diplomacy and discretion.
Excellent planning and organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and develop and shift priorities as needed.
Ability to work effectively in a team-orientated, matrix environment.
Must possess a detail-oriented approach to responsibilities.
Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment with changing priorities and multiple responsibilities.
Ability to manage data using the financial aid module of the student information system.
Computer skills for work processing, spreadsheets and the ability to compile and present data using Excel, PowerPoint, email, use of multimedia tools and web searching.
Ability to make public presentations and work effectively with groups.
Ability to work flexible work schedules including weekend and evenings as needed.
Ability to manage confidential information in a professional manner and use sound judgment at all times.
Ability to represent the medical school and its programs by interacting effectively with individuals and groups of faculty, staff, residents, students and applicants with diverse backgrounds and interests.
Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
