POSITION: Product Engineering Manager
LOCATION: Bangor and Kalamazoo, MI
JOB SUMMARY
This position contributes to the company Mission and Purpose by developing superior design solutions and by leading the selected New Product Development projects and assigned direct reports in the Engineering Department.
Responsibilities also include support for Engineered to Order (ETO) tasks and support for Customer Care function.
The role also leads or participates in the development of Engineering Procedures and Standards for the Engineering Department.
RESPONSIBILITIES Lead selected New Product Development activities in the Engineering Department.
Lead assigned NPD- projects through the whole project life cycle by actively participating in design and development work, by carrying out designs, design reviews and evaluations.
Review, check and approve design work by team members.
Manage the NPD- resources in the department and seek outside engineering services when needed.
Work closely with Product Line Engineers and Systems Engineering team, ensuring that resources, schedules, technical solutions are aligned with expectations.
Develop NPD- project plans and other project documentation such as design project schedules, project and product cost estimates.
Ensure NPD- team participation in and support for cross- functional new product development process through the whole project life cycle.
Ensure that Department deliverables support the entire NPD process including manufacturing, part sales, technical support documentation, customer trial and business development.
Promote innovation and out- of- the- box thinking as part of various aspects of new product development process.
Benchmark new technologies, competitors, mining industry trends and communicate the feedback to Engineering Department and NPD steering committee.
Support Engineering Department’s effort to support sales of capital equipment, part sales and service.
Support ETO- work as necessary with resources in the department and seek outside engineering services when needed.
Participate in quote reviews, compliance evaluations and concept development as necessary.
Work closely with Product Line Engineers and Systems Engineering team in assigned tasks, ensuring that resources, schedules, technical solutions are aligned with expectations.
Coordinate responses to assigned sales, aftermarket, supply and manufacturing questions, engage cross- functional teams for reviews as necessary.
Support or lead development and implementation of engineering procedures and standards for Engineering Department to achieve state- of- the- art process and product excellence.
Develop and maintain design standards that ensure quality product performance, standardization and commonality, manufacturability, and ease of service support.
Ensure a manufacturing orientation within the department.
Develop and maintain a department expertise in domestic and international standards related to underground mining, mobile equipment, related worker safety agencies.
Promote culture within direct reports consistent with company values and direction.
Develop a highly skilled and efficient NPD- engineering team consisting of internal resources and external partners.
Maintain a positive working relationship with Getman Corporation employees to ensure a cooperative and productive work environment.
Carry out and promote opportunities for customer site visits.
Promote an open, honest and respectful relationship with direct reports, peers and customers.
Cultivate a departmental commitment to continuous improvement and challenging of accepted practices to ensure Getman utilizes optimal designs for cost, durability, and customer satisfaction.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE BS or MS in Engineering, Mechanical or other related field Min.
8 years of heavy/mobile equipment design and development experience, including expertise in one or more of the following fields: mechanical, mobile hydraulics, controls and/or electrical systems engineering Min.
5 years of experience in NPD- Project Management, including cross- functional team leadership Strong experience in SolidWorks and PDM, other CAD- tools Experience working with external (off- shore) technical resources Experience in Mining Industry SKILLS, TALENTS AND/OR CHARACTERISTICS Effective people leadership and organizational skills Ability to mentor and direct engineering resources in project work New Product Development process expertise, project management skills Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups Practice discretion and diplomacy when interacting with employees, peers, and customers Read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical information Build relationships with a diverse group of individuals, including peers and colleagues, customers, suppliers and other external partners.
