08 PURPOSE: Oversee staff and collaborate with community organizations and services.
Coordinate with other departments and agencies to facilitate effective communication and may directly work with juveniles and families.

Not all locations may be accessible, leading to potential barriers during site visits.
Youth may need to be physically restrained.
May be on-call duty in an emergency event if no other probation officers are available.
May expect to work a schedule that starts earlier or ends later than traditional court hours of business.
Work may be performed in an office, courtroom, in the field, and/or from remote locations.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise probation staff to help them accomplish professional development goals.
Mentor direct reports by accompanying them in field work, provide training opportunities, share experiences, promote a learning culture, and be available for support.
Hold regular meetings to discuss case progress, share updates, address concerns, and provide guidance.
Encourage open dialogue, respectful discussion, and communication.
Conduct performance evaluations.
Provide constructive feedback, identify areas for improvement, and recognize exceptional performance.
Draft improvement plans and administer progressive discipline if needed.
Manage time off requests and approve payroll.
Recruit and train juvenile probation staff, facilitating team integration.
Stay current with legislation, policy changes, trends, and best practices in juvenile justice and incorporate this knowledge into program planning and decision-making.
Develop and implement policies and procedures with the Family Division Administrator for the effective operation of juvenile probation.
Regularly evaluate and assess processes to identify any new weaknesses and strengths.
Review petitions and complaints, make informed decisions about court processing, and distribute the resulting caseloads among assigned diversion, probation, and intensive probation officers.
Oversee case management system, establish standardized procedures for records and data collection, analyze case statistics, and create reports.
Problem solve and identify solutions for the supervision of youth when needed.
Intervene in crisis situations including out-of-home placement and other complex cases.
Collaborate with attorneys, law enforcement, other courts, service providers, treatment agencies, schools, and other interested parties.
Coordinate with the community, schools, and partners for the holistic support of juvenile offenders.
Promote organizations and programs that can respond to family needs, and research innovative solutions that allow the courts to be a resource.
Consider other successful programs that align with Van Buren County Court’s goals and objectives to meet the evolving needs of our youth.
Obtain and maintain required certifications and training for the juvenile probation field and the courts.
Participate in the Michigan Association of Family Court Administrators and other professional associations or workgroups to enhance own professional development and networking.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, education, a human service field, or a related field that qualifies the person to manage or supervise the delivery of juvenile services per SCAO Memorandum 1985-5.
Must have completed the Michigan Judicial Institute certification training for juvenile court staff.
EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two years’ experience working with youth and/or families from a variety of social, economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds.
Previous work experience in a family court setting, residential treatment facility, or juvenile detention facility is desired.
Demonstrated ability to be a team leader.
Supervisory experience preferred.
SUPERVISION: The position is supervised by the Family Division Administrator.
