General Summary Provides journey level craft labor, working with tools to install, repair, replace and perform preventive maintenance for all types of roofing and related fixtures including flashing, counterflashing, sumps and vents.
Major Duties Installs, repairs and maintains EPDM, vinyl, coaltar pitch, asphalt, 3-in-1 shingle, wood shake, metal and other roofing.
Removes deteriorated and saturated roofing and insulation materials, cutting, chopping, shipping, prying or peeling roofing materials and insulation away from adjoining sound roofing sections, parapet walls, projections and other structures.
Lays in new insulation, including polystyrene, fiberglass, perlite and other fiber insulation materials, ensuring new insulation is laid in proper thickness to bring flush with existing insulation.
Utilizes brushes and rollers to apply bonding agents for EPDM roofing; caulks joints with liquid EPDM material; cuts EPDM to size and places on bonding agent; and rolls EPDM laps into bonding agent on roof surfaces.
Removes damaged and deteriorated roofing materials and debris from work sites.
Provides information required to update building and systems drawings to accurately reflect current status.
Determines inventory requirements for supplies, construction materials and replacement parts, and notifies supervisory personnel when (re)ordering is necessary.
Operates a motor vehicle to transport tools, supplies and materials to work sites.
Minimum Qualifications Must be able to read and comprehend written instructions and safety regulations regarding the performance of job duties, and must have sufficient writing and mathematical skills.
Completion of a registered apprenticeship program, or an established, certified training program recognized by the University and/or written verification of a minimum of five (5) years experience at the journeyperson level in the trade.
Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.
Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job and use the tools of the trade.
Must be able to tolerate exposure to the full range of weather conditions and must be able to tolerate extreme temperatures for extended periods of time.
A physical examination administered by the employer’s designated physician.
