The position begins in May through October and approximately 40 hours per week.
The Seasonal Code Compliance Field Inspector performs field inspections and related office work for the enforcement of Chapter 21 of the Kalamazoo Code of Ordinances related to public nuisances mostly involving, but not limited to, tall grass/weeds and noxious weeds (poison ivy, poison oak, ragweed, etc.
).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The Seasonal Code Compliance Field Inspector is under the supervision of the Code Administration Manager.
Responsibilities include initiating inspections and investigating complaints or referrals of possible ordinance violations.
Investigation, documentation, record keeping and tracking of caseload are characteristic of this position.
Examples of Duties
Monitors the weed nuisance hotline, service message database, and inspects properties to ensure compliance with the tall grass/weed and noxious weed nuisance regulations.
Also proactively enforces the ordinance on a systematic basis.
Tracks complaints received using BS&A software and logs all inspection results on handheld computer;
Photographs violations and attaches photos to the electronic records;
Handle phone calls regarding complaints and cited violations.
Prepares written notices to property owners and charges the appropriate cost recovery fee for inspection and notice preparation;
Tracks cases of properties not in compliance with the nuisance regulations; Schedules re-inspections ten days after notices are sent to confirm violations have been abated;
Prepares list of mowing referrals on an as needed basis for properties that remain non-compliant;
Continues to track all open cases until abated by property owner or City mowing contractor and appropriate invoices are entered.
Accurate review of contractor invoicing, and invoicing property owners.
Essential Qualifications
Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
Valid State of Michigan motor vehicle operator's license and good driving record.
Considerable skill in dealing with the public and computer experience is a must.
Good verbal and written communication skills, as well as good organizational skills, are essential.
Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment is necessary.
