DESCRIPTION: The Construction Drafting Assistant is part of the Design Team and is in training to become the next Construction Drafter.
This will require learning everything the Construction Drafter does including producing detailed drawings and renderings for pricing homes, remodeling projects, and fabrication of custom architectural and structural elements.
The Construction Drafting Assistant will be gaining a working knowledge of the scope of work needed for each job and so be able to field questions regarding basic sizing, structural engineering, and architectural details of the drawings, plans and related components.
Some management of support personnel is part of this job.
GENERAL SCOPE: The 5 Major roles of this position are (exclusively as directed by the Construction Drafter): Assist Preliminary Design Support Assist Sales Support Assist Production Support Assist Managing Design Resources Assist Managing Support Staff & Outsourced Supplementary Services Accountability The Construction Drafting Assistant assists in supervising Drafting Support Positions.
The Construction Drafting Assistant reports directly to the Construction Drafter and indirectly to the Design Manager Work hours and schedule: Works normally between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm; Under normal conditions, the position is anticipated to be a 45 hour per week commitment.
Periodically, the job will require extra effort and time; The work schedule may be altered when required to complete contracted jobs.
Compensation: The Construction Drafting Assistant is a full-time, salaried position; Salary and benefits commensurate with experience; Expected pay to start at $55,000/yr Compensation package may include, wages, paid time off for sick days and vacation, paid holidays, medical coverage, uniforms (company shirts), Simple IRA.
Provided by Company: (as determined necessary by Design Manager) Computer/Device for drafting with appropriate software/apps Monitors and peripheral computing devices Softplan key and subscription Cell Phone Work station at Company Office IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS: Must be willing to learn, adopt and follow company core values An extensive background of hands-on new and remodel residential construction experience Minimum ten (10) years of regular experience in drawing detailed residential architectural plans Knowledge of the current Michigan Residential Building Code and ability to integrate it into drawings Proven track record of successful residential building projects being constructed from self-produced drawings Detail, process, and systems oriented; organized; and understands the importance of follow thru & follow-up; Proficient in use of MS Word, Excel, Builder Trend, and other digital programs, apps, or cloud based software commonly used in the remodeling industry.
Ability to generate 2D and 3D drawings and renderings using Softplan Effective visual communication aptitude with Excellent problem-solving abilities Proven ability to set priorities, be a multi-tasker and decision maker; Working knowledge of and ability to use Builder Trend, or the aptitude to learn; The ability to interact and communicate appropriately with supervisor(s) and other management team members, the crew, subcontractors, and clients.
Must be willing to: be a team player; learn, follow, and enforce company policies and standards; suggest innovations; work alone; embrace new duties and responsibilities; be client service oriented; and teach and mentor others; Be punctual, loyal, safety and goal oriented, organized and detail oriented, and have good personal appearance and habits; Valid Michigan Driver's License and clean driving record Get, Want, and have the capacity for the roles described below Must be able to work remotely as well as in-house DETAILED POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: (These should match the 5 main roles listed above) 20% Assist Preliminary Design Support Work with Sales Support to schedule appointments with clients for initial measure-ups Research Site conditions and zoning restrictions Maintain and follow checklist of information to collect and integrate into “existing” drawings Measure up and produce existing 2D and 3D Drawings (including Site Plan) Meet as needed with local Zoning/ Building/Soil Erosion/Architectural Control Officials to clarify restrictions Communicate with Designer as to availability of drawings to work with 30% Assist Sales Support Turn Design Drawings into a reasonably accurate Bid Set Calculate preliminary structural loads, bearing points and load paths and integrate into Design Drawings Size and sketch any structural components and request preliminary pricing Work with Floor and Roof system providers to obtain pricing while verifying plan integration Answer questions/brainstorm with Sales/Estimating to solve structural or architectural issues Provide detailed drawings of custom architectural elements and solicit pricing upon request 40% Assist Production Support Turn accepted contract Bid Set Drawings into accurate and timely Production Drawings Assure code compliance on drawings Meet/Communicate as needed with local Zoning/ Building/ Soil Erosion/ Architectural Control Officials to reconcile projects with job specific restrictions Interact with Production Staff to answer install/ drawing related questions and produce needed detail drawings Provide Site positioning and elevation setting for new and addition construction footprints Field Verify Foundation layouts prior to pouring or laying to assure compliance with plan and site Visit Jobsites as needed to assist Sales and Production staff in answering questions and solving issues Verify selection accuracy and integration of Windows, Exterior Doors, Cabinets, and Appliances with production drawings, then ordering Calculate loads, bearing points and load paths for Production staff as needed Provide detailed drawings for fabrication of any structural steel components, then ordering Work with Floor and Roof system providers to finalize layout and design with plan integration, then ordering Provide detailed drawings for fabrication of any custom architectural elements, then ordering Adjust final Electrical schematics to reflect any changes for construction drawings 5% Assist Managing Design Resources Attend weekly Scheduling Meetings to determine priorities as directed by Sales/Design & Production Attend and participate in weekly Design Team Meetings Develop and Manage Libraries of Custom Drawing Symbols Develop and maintain design and construction standards and graphics (i.
e.
Closets, Decks, etc.
) through interaction with Sales, Design and Production Staff Research (as determined by Design Team) further use and application of design and engineering software 5% Assist Managing Support Staff & Outsourced Supplementary Services Where using a licensed Structural Engineer, to coordinate information with appropriate bid or production drawings Train, Lead, Schedule, Manage & Hold Accountable any Drafting Support Staff or Interns This Job Description is a living document and may continue to evolve as the Division grows, technology changes and other circumstances change.
